Fire Department

The Okeechobee City Fire Department consists of twelve paid and 12 volunteer firefighters. All paid firefighters are crossed trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) as are some of the volunteers.

The Department is led by Fire Chief Herb Smith. Chief Smith is assisted by  Administrative Secretary Sue Christopher.

The City Fire Department was formed in 1916 and its volunteers have been chartered since 1915. Some department members have been volunteers since they were 16 and still in high school, some forty years ago. Until 1978, The City  Fire Department was the sole fire protection agency for all of Okeechobee County.

The City Fire Department has four state certified fire inspectors. They are responsible for its fire protection program. Businesses in the community are inspected annually. Floor plans are drawn to insure that firefighters are aware of any danger. The fire department is an active promoter of fire and smoke detectors.

City fire hydrants are also inspected by the fire department and each is color coded so that the firefighters will know how much water is discharged in case it would need to be accessed.

The apparatus that the City Fire Department currently maintain consists of two Class "A" pumpers, a multipurpose vehicle (brush/medical), a 100ft ladder truck and a 1949 American LaFrance Fire Engine.
